Pisarz, poeta, krytyk, kurator sztuki - ur. 1933 r. na Jamajce, natomiast w 1946 r. przeniósł się do Wielkiej Brytanii. Studiował historię w Merton College w Oxfrodzie. Po odbyciu służby w RAF-ie (Siły Lotnicze Wielkiej Brytanii)I,LA), gdzie pisał hasła reklamowe, zajął się pisarstwem na poważnie. W Londynie skupił wokół siebie grupę poetów a także przeprowadzał z artystami wywiady dla Radia BBC 3. Pisarz był kuratorem licznych wystaw sztuki. Napisał ponad 100. książek na różne tematy.
